What You’ll Need
🛠 Tools:
✔ Utility knife
✔ Drywall saw
✔ Putty knife (4-inch and 6-inch)
✔ Sanding sponge or sandpaper (120-150 grit)
✔ Drywall sanding block
📦 Materials:
✔ Drywall patch (or scrap drywall)
✔ Drywall screws
✔ Wood backing (if needed)
✔ Joint compound (mud)
✔ Drywall tape (paper or mesh)
✔ Primer & paint (to match existing wall)
Step 1: Prepare the Area
🔹 Use a utility knife to clean up rough edges around the hole.
🔹 If the cutout is too large, insert wood backing behind the drywall to support the patch.
Step 2: Cut and Install the Patch
🔹 Measure the cutout and cut a drywall patch slightly larger.
🔹 Place the patch over the hole and trace its shape for a perfect fit.
🔹 Secure the patch using drywall screws (if attaching to wood backing).
Step 3: Apply Drywall Tape
🔹 Cover the seams with drywall tape to prevent cracking.
🔹 Use mesh tape for small repairs and paper tape for larger patches.
Step 4: Apply Joint Compound (Mud)
🔹 Use a putty knife to spread a thin layer of joint compound over the tape and patch.
🔹 Let it dry for 24 hours, then apply a second coat, feathering the edges.
🔹 After drying, lightly sand for a smooth finish.
Step 5: Prime and Paint
🔹 Wipe away dust and apply primer to seal the repair.
🔹 Once dry, paint the area to match the rest of the wall.
How Long Does It Take?
🔹 Small patches: 1-2 hours (excluding drying time)
🔹 Larger repairs: 2-3 hours over two days (to allow drying between coats)
